The day is near!

Today is packet pick up for the Surf-City Half-Marathon. I'm been training for this for a while, well actually I was training for the Revel Half-Marathon in November 2014, but had some bad feet pain and had to drop out.

Now after three weeks of very little running because of a very bad cough and sinus infection, I will be running on Sunday. I still have a cough and just finished my antibiotics three days ago. I do not expect to reach my goal time mostly because I will likely have to stop and walk a few times to give my lungs a break and cough up junk. HOWEVER, I will run this race.

My body feels tired and I want to go to bed especially with this cold, rainy weather. For now, I'm drinking honey, ginger tea resting and hopping for the best.

Hope my next post will have good news.

PS. I just signed up my son and I for the Coaster Run in March 2014, should be good times again.

Why DO thou Run!

I was a 38-year-old Mexican American women weighing 200 lbs, when I realized it was time to get moving. I had not exercised since 200 and my diet consisted of all those greasy Mexican food items that I grew up on. I swear something is not Mexican unless it is fried, lathered with butter, rapped in flour, or topped with condiments that could guarantee a heart attack.

In 2013, I decided that I was not getting any younger and soon i would be joining the ranks of those with high blood pressure and diabetes. I could picture myself seating at the kitchen table with friends discussing our sicknesses and which medicines we were on. I did not want to be my future. So I decided to make changes, but no diet for me. I completely changed my diet, got rid of some of my worse enemies like sugar, and fried foods, and red meat. I still eat these, but in moderation. I also started juicing, and started moving.

At first, I hit the gym and did things like the bike and the elliptical and tried things at home like the dailyburn program online. It was all going well, and then one day I got on the treadmill and started running. At first, I could not even run 10 minutes without stopping for air, but I purchased I IPhone app that provided a walk/run program and I was off and have not looked back.

Now January 2013, I have lost almost 65 lbs, feel good and full of energy. I run every other day and cross train one time a week. I have suffered some minor injuries from running due to my high level of competitiveness and my miss understanding of my own abilities. Overall, it has been a great adventure.

In 2014, I discovered the world of foot races and have completed several 5K's and 10K's. On February 1, 2015, I will attempt my first half marathon. I feel prepared, yet fearful of the aftermath my body might suffer.

This blog will serve to document my adventures in running, I hope you all find it entertaining, maybe education, but more than anything I hope you realize you are not alone in this dream to become a better you!

Half Marathon Training-Oh cold weather please!!

OK, so granted I live in California were the weather is very nice compared to other states. If you are a runner in another state, you are probably used to running in cold weather. I mean real cold weather like, rain, snow, and wind kind of weather. I am I California girl, I like the colder weather, but my lungs and nose do not.

As I near the end of my half marathon training and the big even nears, I have developed I chest cold with a very deep cough. I know it is because I am such a heavy breather when I run and the weather has been on the cooler side for California. I also ran a night race on January 3, 2015 and it was very cold that night.

So in order to guarantee my lungs will be up for the 13.1 I went to the doctor got cough medication that was very strong and made me very tired. I stopped running for a week, and even let my wife do some weird stuff called Reiki on me to see if it helps.

Not sure, what it was but I am finally feeling better, and ran 3.0 miles on the hamster wheel (aka. treadmill) at a very slow pace to see how my lungs felt. They did well, If I can just keep the momentum going in doors for a few more days, I will be able to run 13.1 although not likely at the pace I would have liked to.

Oh, well there will be another 13.1 I hope I do not catch anything for the summer half, like measles or any other kindergarten germ my son brings home. Those germs love me!

Cheers!! (Me raising my tbs of cough syrup)

REVIEW:The Stick-Self Roller Massager ($23-$42)

The reason why I like this because it is small and you can use it anywhere unlike a foam roller in which you need more space. I find this to be a good way to start and end a run, the muscles seem to appreciate the feel of the roller. I purchased this after a noticed that my calf’s were getting tired and needed some help. After a week of using this my calf’s felt much better. This comes in different sizes depending on your intended use and desired stiffness)

Thumbs Up: Easy to use, does not require a lot of room or a complicated routine.
Thumbs Down: not as affective as a foam roller for deep muscle massage.
