Why DO thou Run!
I was a 38-year-old Mexican American women weighing 200 lbs, when I realized it was time to get moving. I had not exercised since 200 and my diet consisted of all those greasy Mexican food items that I grew up on. I swear something is not Mexican unless it is fried, lathered with butter, rapped in flour, or topped with condiments that could guarantee a heart attack.
In 2013, I decided that I was not getting any younger and soon i would be joining the ranks of those with high blood pressure and diabetes. I could picture myself seating at the kitchen table with friends discussing our sicknesses and which medicines we were on. I did not want to be my future. So I decided to make changes, but no diet for me. I completely changed my diet, got rid of some of my worse enemies like sugar, and fried foods, and red meat. I still eat these, but in moderation. I also started juicing, and started moving.
At first, I hit the gym and did things like the bike and the elliptical and tried things at home like the dailyburn program online. It was all going well, and then one day I got on the treadmill and started running. At first, I could not even run 10 minutes without stopping for air, but I purchased I IPhone app that provided a walk/run program and I was off and have not looked back.
Now January 2013, I have lost almost 65 lbs, feel good and full of energy. I run every other day and cross train one time a week. I have suffered some minor injuries from running due to my high level of competitiveness and my miss understanding of my own abilities. Overall, it has been a great adventure.
In 2014, I discovered the world of foot races and have completed several 5K's and 10K's. On February 1, 2015, I will attempt my first half marathon. I feel prepared, yet fearful of the aftermath my body might suffer.
This blog will serve to document my adventures in running, I hope you all find it entertaining, maybe education, but more than anything I hope you realize you are not alone in this dream to become a better you!
NERD OUT!
